Why do we get bad breath ?
Bad breath happens. If you’ve ever gotten that not-so-fresh feeling at a meeting (surrounded by your co-workers) you’re not alone. Studies show that 50 percent of adults have had bad breath, or halitosis, at some point in their lives.
Bad breath starts in the mouth and there are many causes, they include
- Food – breakdown of food in your mouth can increase bacteria and cause odor.
- Tobacco – smoking can cause unpleasant mouth odor and gum disease
- Poor dental hygiene – lack of proper brushing and flossing can leave food in your mouth and this can promote growth of odors and plaque to form on your teeth
- Other causes include Dry Mouth, medications, infections, or underlying medical conditions.
There are some simple things you can do to prevent bad breath. Practice good oral hygiene, brush and floss twice a day. Stop smoking and drink lots of water to keep your mouth moist. See your dentist regularly to check for any underlying dental problems.
