What oral appliance can a dentist make to treat sleep apnea ?
A dentist can make a custom-fit oral appliance, also called a mandibular advancement device (MAD), to treat sleep apnea. This device is designed to keep the airway open during sleep by holding the jaw in a forward position.
The MAD is made of a hard plastic material and fits over the upper and lower teeth, similar to a mouthguard. It is adjustable, allowing the dentist to gradually move the jaw forward until the optimal position is reached.
MADs are most effective for people with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, and are generally not recommended for people with severe sleep apnea. They are also a good option for people who cannot tolerate a CPAP machine or who prefer a more discreet treatment option.
It’s important to consult a dentist or sleep specialist for proper diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea, as an oral appliance may not be appropriate for everyone. The dentist will need to evaluate the severity and underlying cause of the sleep apnea before recommending a treatment plan.
