What is sleep apnea ?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which a person experiences breathing pauses or shallow breathing during sleep. These pauses can last from a few seconds to a few minutes and can occur many times throughout the night, disrupting the quality of sleep.

There are three types of sleep apnea:

  1. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common type and occurs when the muscles in the throat relax and block the airway.
  2. Central sleep apnea (CSA) occurs when the brain fails to send the proper signals to the muscles that control breathing.
  3. Complex sleep apnea syndrome (CSAS) is a combination of both OSA and CSA.

Sleep apnea can cause a variety of symptoms, including excessive daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, morning headaches, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. It can also increase the risk of other health problems, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.  It’s important to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea, as untreated sleep apnea can lead to serious health complications.
