Navigating the dental insurance maze

  • A doctor in America spends on the average $80,000/year dealing with insurance companies
  • An employee in a doctor’s office spends 21 hours per week dealing with insurance companies

There are a myriad of dental insurance companies with varied rules and regulations.   In takes a lot of experience and effort to navigate the maze of dental insurance acronym, codes, paperwork and regulations.  Though the dental insurance can be confusing and a maze there are few things that I want you to learn about your dental insurance.

1. Dental and medical insurance are completely different and this is the cause of confusion for many people.  Dental insurance is really a dental benefit, confused yet!!!  Let me explain, the dental insurance company agrees to pay a predetermined amount for procedures rendered, up to a certain amount per year.  As a patient, you need to understand these “dental benefits” to plan your dental treatment and make informed choices.  These dental benefits are very valuable to offset the cost of dental procedures.

2. Two things that you want to know about your dental insurance are

Annual Maximum–The maximum amount your policy will pay per year for dental care. It is often divided into costs per individual, and (if you are on a family plan) per family

Coverage – This is percentage of the cost that the insurance company will pay, this varies by procedures.

Great dental benefits have great annual maximums and great coverage !!

An the end of the year, for most dental companies, dental benefit are reset back to the dental maximum.  Therefore, it is important to track your benefits throughout the year so you can appropriately plan your dental treatment.

Navigating the dental insurance maze can be time consuming, but it is a great benefit for families.  Modern Smiles Dental Care is network provider for numerous dental insurance companies and our office goes to great lengths to work with your dental company to maximize your benefit and to stay on top of the changes to dental insurance rules and regulations.
